Instead, we’re left with jam-packed closets and overwhelming piles of clutter. And as we all know, the more stuff we own, the more stuff we need to organize & maintain – both of which pulls us away from the things we rather do.

And so we embark on a decluttering journey to simplify and make our lives easier. The problem then becomes getting ourselves to let go…

I’ve been helping people get organized for 14 years. Most people know me from my creative organizing channel on YouTube that quickly grew to a million subscribers and 100,000,000+ video views. 

While I’ve been named “The Decluttering Queen” by Good Morning America and “One of the Most Organized People in America” by HGTV…

I haven’t always been organized. In fact, one of my nicknames growing up was “pig”.

As a kid, I was always seeking comfort and safety as I often felt anxious and depressed.

At school, I was always a slow visual learner who struggled to read and write. In gym class, I was always the shortest, slowest, last picked person. And with classmates, I was always the shy awkward computer girl who was teased for my big nose.

I found my comfort and safety in organizing my room. Organizing numbed the pain.

Starting at age 12, I would rearrange my bedroom almost monthly. I’d reorganize my craft bin under my bed regularly. And if you hired me to babysit, you’d always come home to a clean sink and an organized playroom.

When I went to Virginia Tech, my dorm room was neat & tidy, I always had an organized to-do list, and hallmates would tell you I often stayed home on Friday nights just to clean.

But there were also times when my room was a mess…

Though you couldn’t tell from the outside, I know depression and anxiety all too well.

When the depression showed up, chores often got abandoned. My room looked like a tornado went through it – piles of clothes on the floor, bed unmade, messy backpack/binder, nothing put back. Hence the nickname “pig”.

If you know what depression feels like, you know the smallest things feel impossible to do. And so things don’t always get done. Before you know it, it’s easy to feel completely off track. The shame of it all keeps you out of the game.

It wasn’t until the mess became so uncomfortable that I was motivated to get back on track. The vicious all-or-nothing cycle (messy / organized) can be difficult to break-free from without effective tools and strategies.

My depression and anxiety continued in my 20s as I transitioned from college to adulthood, moved to my first apartment, started my first romantic relationship (with my now-husband, Ed), and started a stressful corporate job as an IT auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Thus, I became really good at organizing as an outlet for finding calm when things felt chaotic.

It was the end of 2007 when I realized I had a real passion for organizing. Not only had I become good at it (and loved to do it), but it helped me feel calm and centered. I wasn’t anxious about tomorrow. I wasn’t depressed about yesterday. Instead, I was present, in the moment, channeling my creativity to help my future self become more productive. 

Likewise, I quickly learned that other people needed help getting organized. Little did I know at the time, but the combination of finding something you’re good at, that you love to do, that other people need, and that you can make a living from, is a recipe for success that the Japanese call IKIGAI. It was a couple months later that Ed and I decided to start our organizing business, which would forever impact our lives and the lives we were helping.

While entrepreneurship has been a wild ride of ups and downs, starting a business 14 years ago has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s led me to share my gifts with the world while also leading me on a healing journey to discover my truest, most authentic self.

Fast forward to today, I still love to organize as much as I did when I was younger! However, I now see organizing differently. What was once an outlet to numb pain is now an essential way of living so I can focus on what matters most.

While I’ll always be managing my mental health, I’ve found that one of the keys to taking care of myself is owning a reasonable amount of possessions combined with having effective organizing systems in place – both of which make keeping up with things easier to do when life feels hard.

In the hard moments of life, the last thing we need is to shuffle through endless piles of clutter. Clutter just adds an extra layer of “pain” on top of the existing pain of whatever else is going on in our lives. While we can’t always control what happens to us in life, we can control the clutter…

Which brings me to today and the effective method I accidentally discovered for quickly and easily controlling the clutter in your home even if you feel completely overwhelmed and unmotivated! 

The method I discovered is one that works for anyone. And for anything in your home. And it works every time…

Despite the fact that I’ve become great at organizing… I’m still no different from you.

Here’s what happened…

When the pandemic started, I felt called to show up to our community like I’ve never shown up before. After all, the world was in chaos and leaders were needed like never before.

And so one day in March 2020 I put out an email to our community inviting people to join me for 8 live “work-along” organizing sessions so we could all organize together while staying home during lockdown. 

The cost was “pay what you want” and we committed to donating 10% of all sales to Feeding America as a way to give back. 

People started to join. And then more people started to join.

Before we knew it, we had hundreds of people registered to declutter and organize live alongside others…

We put together a schedule with dedicated set times to meet that would allow people to stop worrying about when they would get their chores done and instead simply show up for the appointment and easily get started without hesitation.

We met frequently and worked in timed segments which offered a structure for staying focused, on track, and getting things done.

We shared the microphone so people could proudly share their wins, progress, and updates, and be celebrated among a kind, encouraging, positive, and supportive community.

We gave people space to ask questions and talk out the overwhelm so I could offer strategies, ideas, and guidance for easily taking the next step.

We created a private place for non-judgmental people to work in small groups so they could collaborate with others and work toward a common goal.

Our 60-minute themed sessions are faster-paced and focused on decluttering or organizing a dedicated space in the house! Themes are broken down into several 10-15 minute tasks. Focusing on the theme is optional if you prefer a slower pace or to work on alternative tasks. Past themes include: home office, paper, bedroom, kitchen, pantry, bathroom, etc. New themes are frequently added.

(7 per month)

Our 60-minute expert Q&A sessions are offered to provide you with guidance, effective strategies, and new ideas so you can get organized faster and easier. You’re encouraged to bring any questions related to decluttering, organizing, cleaning or anything in between! 

Small Group Sessions

TeamOrganize is for anyone who has the desire to get organized – beginners included! Often what happens when a person (often a beginner) decides to get organized is they immediately feel overwhelmed by everything they need to do, have trouble making decisions, and as a result, end up procrastinating.

By joining TeamOrganize, you’ll have access to expert guidance and support to help you break down the overwhelming projects into doable tasks, accountability to keep you focused and on track, and a non-judgmental community to encourage you to keep going.

If you’re just getting started with organizing, the most important thing you can do is simply show up to a session and let the positive energy of our group inspire you to take action! You won’t regret it.
